What better way to launch our celebrity real estate blog than to provide a behind-the-scenes look at what pro athletes encounter when they are traded from one team to another in the middle of a season?

After all, we at Antigen Realty and the global Antigen Realty Network are the leading providers of premium real estate services to the Athlete / Entertainer Generation, better known as the world of Sports and Entertainment.

When players are traded in the NBA, NFL, NHL, Major League Baseball, MLS, and other professional team sports, the fans see the players in their familiar uniforms one night and new uniforms a couple of nights later.

However, have you ever considered all of the logistics that go on behind the scenes? How the players get from one city to another, or how much time they have to report to their new teams? From a real estate standpoint, how do they pack up all of their belongings, leave their houses, condominiums, or apartments behind, and find new homes in their new cities? This is a rather overwhelming task for any one individual, yet it's a major component of the business in which we specialize...athlete and celebrity real estate and relocation.

After former NBA MVP Allen Iverson was traded earlier this week, from the Denver Nuggets to the Detroit Pistons, for former NBA Playoff MVP Chauncey Billups, former NBA All-Star Antonio McDyess, and Cheikh Samb, the 7'1" rookie from Senegal who just arrived in the NBA only four GAMES ago ("Welcome to the League, Rook!"), we thought it would be great to analyze the trade from purely a relocation perspective.

What we've learned by working with so many pro athletes over the years, who have been traded mid-season, is that a smooth and seamless transition is vitally important to not only the players and their performance and well-being, but equally as important to their families.

No matter how much they might anticipate being traded, when the phone ultimately rings, or they are pulled off of the team plane, and notified by coaches or management that a trade has been consummated, players go into scramble mode. Unfortunately, most athletes and their families aren't aware of their rights and responsibilities before they are traded, which causes unnecessary stress and confusion.

There are rules by which traded players and their teams must abide. These rules have been collectively bargained by and between their respective leagues and player unions. To get a better idea of these rules, you don't need to look any farther than at the following pages in the Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA), National Football League (NFL), National Hockey League (NHL), and Major League Soccer (MLS) collective bargaining agreements.

"It happened so fast," Carmelo Anthony said of the trade involving his Denver teammate and good friend, Iverson. "After (Saturday's) game we talked about putting the (Los Angeles) Laker game behind us and getting ready for Golden State (Warriors). I don't know if he knew something before that game or not, but like I said it's always tough when you lose a teammate and a friend at the same time.

On the other side of the country, the Detroit Pistons had recently arrived in Charlotte, North Carolina for their Monday night game against the Charlotte Bobcats, when the negotiations between teams were finalized. Prior to the Pistons' shoot-around (a light practice the day of a game) Monday morning, Billups, McDyess, and Samb were already heading to the airport. (McDyess, a former Nugget, refused to report to Denver, has since negotiated a contract buyout, and has reportedly received interest from 20 or more other NBA teams, but that's a whole 'nother story).

According to Rex Chapman, the Denver Nuggets' Vice President of Player Personnel and former NBA player himself, "I don't know exactly when Chauncey is going to get in. He's on the first flight out of Charlotte to Detroit to pick-up some things and then get here as quickly as possible. I know he wants to get here."

Billups grew up in Denver, went to the University of Colorado in Boulder, and played for the Denver Nuggets once before. So, this is a second homecoming for him. In fact, at last check, he still owned the Highlands Ranch, Colorado house that he purchased from former Denver Nugget Bryant Stith, who bought the house from former Denver Nugget Tom Hammonds, the current NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) Pro Stock drag racing star, who coincidentally enough was once traded from the Washington Bullets to the Charlotte Hornets for guess who...yep, Rex Chapman.

As a result of Billups' pit-stop in Detroit, he wasn't able to take (and pass) his mandatory physical exam in Denver until Thursday, November 6, which prevented all of the players involved in the transaction from suiting up and playing for their new teams.

So, Allen Iverson sat on the bench Tuesday evening alongside his new Detroit Pistons coaches, watching his teammates defeat the Toronto Raptors in the Air Canada Center. He wouldn't have to wait too long to get back on the court, however.

Friday night, he donned his new Pistons' road uniform, and dropped 24 points in his debut...a 103-96 loss to the New Jersey Nets, which took place at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey...only a one hour and forty minute drive (depending on who is driving) from his house in Villanova, Pennsylvania, which he's been trying to sell since his trade from the Philadelphia 76ers to the Denver Nuggets nearly two years ago.
